Inpatient Programs

Our inpatient group therapy programs support recovery of patients with a wide range of mental health needs.

Attending inpatient programs

To ensure that your time at hospital is productive, we expect you to attend our inpatient group sessions.

Our programs

  • Encourage a sense of empowerment by recognising your internal strength
  • Promote skill building to help you plan for the future, improve your relationships, work more effectively and better function in day-to-day life
  • Maintain or improve your physical wellbeing during your hospital stay

Program types

  • Exercise, health and wellbeing
  • Psychoeducation
  • Introduction to different therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Enhanced Coping Skills Group (ECS)

ECS combines psychoeducation and a supportive group environment to provide inpatients with practical coping skills from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach. A range of 30 topics are offered including Depression Management, Anxiety Management, Relationships, Communication, Goals & Values, Anger Management, Exercise & Nutrition etc. Groups vary in size from 6-12 inpatients, and a range of Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Psychotherapists and Allied Health Assistants facilitate these groups. Patients are provided with a hard-copy module for each topic, as a resource for further reading.

Activity Group

Activity Group is a diversional therapy group, conducted in the Hospital Activity Room. This group is semi-structured, with inpatients free to choose from a range of arts, crafts, table games and group games. Monthly themes are promoted, to provide a basis for many of the activities (i.e. Countries, Christmas, Nature etc.). Activities are tailored to both the individual’s and group’s needs.

Relaxation Group

Relaxation Group is aimed at developing an individual’s ability to both physically and mentally relax. These groups are either Nurse or Therapist facilitated, and are held in the Sandpiper Room, a room solely set-up for relaxation. A salt-lamp, essential-oils diffuser, grounding stones, bean-bags, mats, relaxation music and guided meditation scripts provide for a calming and therapeutic environment.

Gym Group

Gym sessions are run regularly in the Hospital Gym. Inpatients require GP approval to attend the gym, which can be obtained shortly after admission. A ‘healthy body-healthy mind’ approach is strongly encouraged at the Marian Centre.

Other Diversional Groups

Other groups are run as demand allows, including but not limited to, Music Group, Yoga, Dance, Speaker’s Corner, and Walking Groups. A healthy and balanced daily routine is encouraged for all inpatients, and these groups assist in providing for this.
